Women v. The World: The Conservative Attack on Reproductive Rights

This is a climate openly opposed to the progress women have made. This is an assault on our bodies: a doctor may conscientiously object to providing an abortion, but not conscientiously object in any other medical procedure. This is an assault on our sexuality: the original draft of one federal bill sought to deny federal funds for abortions of rape victims who were not “forcibly” raped, but raped nonetheless. This is an assault to our integrity: one Georgia bill seeks to redefine victims in rape, stalking and domestic violence cases as “accusers”. This is an assault on our intelligence: women find themselves forced to go through “abortion education,” waiting 24 hours, and “thinking” deeply on their personal decision to abort because women just aren’t seen as intellectually capable of deciding what is best for their bodies, their families, and themselves without government intervention.

Green Is the New Red

Brilliantly written, meticulously accurate, and deeply emotional, Green Is the New Red: An Insider’s Account of A Social Movement Under Siege is a collection of intimately personal stories of activists that every-day Americans need to hear, without these accounts the draconian chapters in U.S. history filled with senate hearings and blacklists are doomed to repeat themselves …repetitions like these, we as a nation cannot afford.

Pakistan: in the Wake Of Cairo, Tunisia, Bombings & Flooding

so much of this suffering is preventable, if you had a government who cared or an education system that empowered people to fight back against government corruption. It is this kind of suffering, corruption and governmental neglect that leaves the population vulnerable to any number of forces, particularly those that are seen as the alternative saviors to the poor who have been so neglected by their government.

Awake in my Cell

By Malik A. Uhmari, Sparrow Media Contributor Here I sit in my cell, alone. Alone in my thoughts, yet no more than three-feet away, just outside my door, there is life. There is commotion; there is a variety of activity. A more accurate description would be “festivity.” I resist engaging in this orchestrated and organized […]

Vaute Couture, Making Headlines & Veganizing Fashion

We’ve all heard someone say lightheartedly that they “fell in love” with a new article of clothing or some similar object, but has a coat ever made you literally fall in love? what about it’s designer? what about her message? Love is a central theme in Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart’s design sensibilities and that is reflected […]

Uprooting the Garden of Hate

The Southern Poverty Law Center, long a bulwark against prejudice in the US, this past week added a number of organizations to its list of hate groups; organizations with innocuous-sounding names such as The Family Research Council and The National Organization for Marriage, whose appellations belie the truth behind their agenda. Couched in a Bizarro-world […]

Black Friday & The Importance Of Having A Voice On The Job

This year I call on progressives to not only speak up for native people, but to remind our friends and family how important it is that workers have the right to organize for better conditions at work. And there’s no better time than Black Friday to have these conversations.

The Largest All-Vegan Thanksgiving Food Share

Long Island Food Not Bombs, in recent years has re-defined food sharing programs, constantly outdoing similar programs and even themselves with the quantity of food shared, it’s quality, and the community participation the sharing inspires.   There has never been a Food Not Bombs chapter that has exponentially grown this way, and in LIFNB’s growth […]

A Plea for Progress

As Election Day is upon us, I vacillate between continuing to play my assigned role in the sham of American “democracy” (i.e. voting for someone who will, in the end, cater not to the needs of the people, but to whichever corporation has financed her/his campaign) and casting a non-vote of protest. This year, however, […]

The Peace Process

I know we’re not supposed to talk about this, it’s too controversial in this country to talk about Israel or Zionism, and it’s easier to pretend that it doesn’t perpetuate the longest standing current day human rights crisis in the world.  It would, I’m sure, make many of us more comfortable if human rights activists […]

Cipher’s ‘Joyous Collapse’ is Making the Political, Personal

This week Sparrow’s Andy Stepanian highlighted the political punk band Cipher in an article he wrote for The Huffington Post. The article garnered a bit of attention for Cipher, which was the point …Cipher has always put sincerity, ethics, and substance before the fluff of the music industry, if only every band had the hearts […]

Race and Religion as Red Herrings

[T]he hangover has hit hard, on many fronts and, true to form, post-racial America has proven itself to be as virulently racist as always; an ignominious tradition remains unbroken…

Bansky Shanks FOX with Storyboard for Simpson’s Intro

Usually we reserve space on this blog only for projects we are actively involved in or for activist efforts that we support but today may be one of the few exceptions.   The semi-elusive UK street artist Banksy was commissioned to storyboard the intro to the primetime animated television show The Simpsons which airs weekly on […]

There are serious concerns that with a lack of popular media attention that the relief efforts to Haiti will subside during […]

Bold Native: Like All Revolutionary Films…

When Open Road Film’s Denis Hennelly and Casey Suchan set out to make Bold Native they wanted to work in the spirit of revolutionary films like Easy Rider. They succeeded. Bold Native is a feature film on the subject of animal liberation but at its heart, much like Easy Rider, it’s a road film about […]
